Brown the peeled onions whole in olive oil. Then add vinegar, salt, sugar and about 250 ml of water. Bring to a boil and simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes. Increase the heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the liquid has thickened into syrup. Allow to cool.
