Mix flour with baking powder, sugar and vanilla sugar. Cut butter into small cubes and add, finally add the eggs and milk.

Knead all the ingredients into a smooth shortcrust pastry. Chill for 30 minutes (then the dough will be easier to work with).

Divide the dough into 2 parts. Roll out the 1st part and place it on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Peel, core and grate the apples and spread on the dough. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and cinnamon (to taste).

Roll out the 2nd half of the dough, cut into strips with a pastry wheel and place in a lattice shape over the apples. Brush with beaten egg.

Bake the Apfelschlangl at 180 °C hot air for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
